V8 rising star set to race in Sweden

Phillip Island review2:48

V8 Supercars: Jessica Yates and Mark Skaife review race 6 and 7 of the V8 Supercars Championship at Phillip Island.

Scott McLaughlin will race in the opening round of the 2016 STCC.

SCOTT McLaughlin will become the latest V8 Supercars star to test his mettle overseas, the Kiwi flyer set to make his debut in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.

Volvo have tabbed him for a one-off drive in the season-opener in Sweden this weekend where he will drive Polestar Cyan Racing’s third car at the Skövde Airport Race.

“I am looking forward to go to Sweden again for my second visit, this time I will be driving a race car which is exactly what I want to do,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin will drive the team’s third car, reuniting him with Robert Dahlgren who makes his return to racing for the first time since they were teammates during the 2014 V8 Supercars season.

His opportunity comes as a substitute for the team’s regular driver, Prince Carl Philip, who is unavailable due to the 70th birthday celebrations of his father King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

“I am just looking forward to the challenge and will try to do a good job for the prince of Sweden who I am subbing in for,” he said.

“I am really excited to join my old teammate Robert Dahlgren in the STCC with Polestar Cyan Racing. Hopefully we will come away with a podium, that would be great.”

McLaughlin heads to Sweden with strong form, having swept both pole positions, race wins and the lap record at the most recent round of the V8 Supercars Championship at Phillip Island.

The car he will drive has strong pedigree, too.

Volvo’s STCC-spec S60 dominated last year’s season with factory drivers Thed Bjork and Fredrik Ekblom taking 10 of the 14 race wins on offer, Bjork taking home his third straight series title.

“Warm congratulations from all of us at Polestar Cyan Racing to Prince Carl Philip and while we are sorry to miss him for the first race, Scott is a young and promising racing talent who has done a great job in Australia,” Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar, said.

“We are delighted to have him with us for the first race and he will certainly face a tough challenge with so limited time in the STCC car, but we are confident in his abilities to adapt.”

The overseas trip comes at an opportune time. Not only is the V8 season in the middle of its first real break for 2016, but it also comes as McLaughlin continues to evaluate his future beyond the end of his existing contract with Garry Rogers Motorsport, set to expire at the end of this year.

McLaughlin will hit the track for opening practice and qualifying on Saturday ahead of two races on the Sunday.
